3. Conclusions
In this article, we begin with a brief look at the history of computing machines. Since the advent of microelectronic circuits, computer technology has made incredible progress, with rates of advancement unmatched by any other technology developed by human activity. We have highlighted the various elements that have enabled this spectacular evolution. Next, we introduce the basic concepts of computer architecture. These are essential to understanding today's architectures. They are summarized in figure 11 . As indicated, these concepts will be developed in a series of specific articles in the collection.
