2. Digital information storage on DNA
New methods of molecular information storage are being considered to increase storage capacity, reduce media size and increase data retention time. Recent advances in DNA reading and writing technologies have led researchers to consider this natural polymer as a medium for digital archives. DNA can store 1 bit for around 50 atoms, whereas magnetic storage requires around a million atoms, not including mechanical support. A recent report from the Academy of Technologies explores a promising alternative to the conventional model: data archiving on a molecular scale.
