Active sonars are used by a wide variety of platforms, while passive
sonars are used mainly by SMs. This undoubtedly explains the difference
in the volume of open literature relating to these two fields, as
submariners are not particularly talkative. This difference in the
volume of sources no doubt explains why this article is longer than
the one on passive
