9. Conclusion
In the course of this article, we have presented the main aspects that differentiate active from passive sonar, whether in terms of theory (TS, GT), technology (DNA, transducers, etc.) or operational use. But, as with passive sonar, the use of the sonar equation remains the common thread running through the analysis of range performance. Readers will have noticed that the ranges calculated for the three very different examples are not in major contradiction with observations at sea, despite the significant uncertainties inherent in the field of underwater detection. Another benefit of the sonar equation is the ability to take an overall view of the vast field of active sonar, and thus to highlight dimensional parameters such as SL and TS.
