4.1 Locating objects buried or hidden by vegetation
More than 120 million anti-personnel and anti-tank mines are deployed worldwide in some 70 countries. There are some 675 different types of mine. Whatever their type, they continue to kill or seriously injure civilians decades after conflicts have ended, and severely handicap the economic and social development of the regions they affect.
The main difficulty for mine clearance is locating these mines, which are made of a variety of materials, can take very different shapes and are concealed in very disparate environments (soil, vegetation, etc.).
