6. Imax Corporation technology
Founded in Mississauga in 1970, Imax Systems Corporation, formerly Multiscreen Corporation (1967), has dominated the special-format sector since the late 1960s. A pioneer and market leader in giant screens, wide-format films and dynamic attractions, at the start of 2002 the company had attracted over 600 million spectators to more than 250 special-format cinemas around the world. Since its creation, the company's research and development activities have diversified to consolidate its monopoly through the design, construction and rental of cameras and projectors; maintenance; and the production, post-production and distribution of films in 15/70 format (70 mm/15 perforations per frame in horizontal scrolling)
