2.1 Origin and types of defects in HD images

Possible faults may arise from :

From the source, linked to internal source processing :

  • pre-filtering, which can reduce resolution by reducing the amount of detail;

  • compression, which can give rise to artefacts linked to too high a rate (blurring and block effect) or the concatenation of different compression formats (INTRA, INTER...);

  • decimation (deletion of measurement results) in both luminance and chrominance, e.g. from 4:4:4 to 4:2:2 or 3:1:1;

  • interlacing linked to changes from interlaced to progressive scan structures;

  • intrinsic film defects...
