3. PW encapsulations
This section presents two examples of PW encapsulation. However, many other types of encapsulation exist, and the reader should refer to the standards for more information.
3.1 PW ATM [RFC4717]
The ATM protocol can be implemented directly with ATM switches, in which case we speak of an ATM infrastructure, or alternatively via IP/MPLS routers supporting the PW function. The ATM network is considered one of the first backbone networks in the multiservice sense, capable of transporting different types of traffic (Ethernet, IP, MPLS, TDM) with the required quality of service.
