2. SIP messages

Due to SIP's client-server orientation, the messages exchanged are either requests or responses. In both cases, the messages are text-based (like HTTP messages on the World Wide Web), which essentially makes the protocol easier to implement and more extensible.

2.1 Requests

The current version of SIP (version 2.0, [2] ) provides for six distinct requests, enabling a call to be set up, capacities to be negotiated (media types to be used for audiovisual exchanges) or a session to be closed:

  • INVITE: set-up request, inviting a user (human or non-human) to participate in a communication session. The sender of this request indicates the types of media...
