The variety and complexity of connectivity services has grown steadily over the years, as network technologies have evolved. The recent emergence of 5G mobile networks has put the spotlight back on the concept of the "slice", i.e. an overlay network deployed on a physical infrastructure, which is thus broken down into logical slices, a form of virtual private network (VPN) with performance characteristics compatible with the needs of the most demanding services, from "immersive" services based on the use of virtual reality or augmented reality techniques requiring extremely low latencies, to services based on the Internet of Things deployed on a large scale.
