4. Conclusion

Energy storage microdevices have been developed for over 30 years, and several companies are already marketing products. Nevertheless, the technology is still not mature, and suffers from energy and power density limitations in relation to emerging applications in microelectronics and the Internet of Things. A number of architectural and material optimizations have recently made a significant improvement in meeting specifications. Overall electrochemical performance can be further optimized by considering module (stacking) and system (power management ICs) approaches.

Optimizing the performance of energy storage microdevices relies primarily on the ionic transport properties of the materials used, and in particular the ionic conductivity of thin-film solid electrolytes.
