2. Wheel-rail adhesion
2.1 Tractive and braking forces

The traction force of the thermal or electric motor of a self-propelled rail vehicle – locomotive, metro engine or tramway – is applied to the rail by each drive wheel via a mechanical transmission consisting of :
of the drive shaft ;
a motor speed reducer ;
of the axle, the axis connecting the drive wheels. The differential is provided by the conicity of the wheels (see 1.1
