4. Future prospects for photovoltaics
The latest report from IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency) shows that renewable energy sources continued their strong growth, adding 171 GW (figure 19 ). The increase was driven by additional solar and wind power capacity (84%). The report highlights the contribution of renewable energies in emerging and developing countries. Almost two-thirds of all new power generation capacity added in 2018 came from these countries. In terms of installed renewable capacity, Oceania (17.1%) outstripped Asia (11.4%), while Africa (8.4%) came third.
