2. Principles of sound insulation

Acoustic insulation must be considered at the design stage, taking into account all potential sources of noise, then specified and implemented according to the different walls concerned.

2.1 Wall acoustics

Acoustic insulation is based on three main principles: the law of mass, the law of mass-spring-mass, and the law of tightness.

  • Mass law

    The heavier it is, the better it insulates. The acoustic performance of a single wall, made of a single material, varies according to its nature and mass per unit area. For example, for the same thickness, a concrete wall insulates better than a plasterboard wall, because concrete is heavier than plaster for the same volume. The sound insulation level...
