4. Impeded shrinkage cracking

4.1 Notion of awkward withdrawal

Apart from external loads, the phenomenon of shrinkage, when hindered, can lead to a risk of cracking [C 2 255] . Shrinkage of a part is hindered when it cannot take place freely.

  • For example, in the case of parts clamped at their ends or cast on a rubbing surface, or blocked by construction (e.g. sail cast on a rigid footing, invert with micropiles)....
