2. Luminance ratios
The pioneering work of E. Barthès and J.L. Richard (Méthode progressive de définition de l'espace visuel dans les locaux de travail - Progressive method for defining visual space in workplaces), in the field of the visual environment, made it possible to identify a number of rules for luminance ratios between walls. This work has also highlighted the role of focal objects and decoration, a role generally ignored in recommendations.
2.1 Limits
We consider that a ratio of less than one hundred must exist between extreme luminances that can be assimilated to luminances of material surfaces. Beyond this, surfaces become luminances and are no longer conceived as material elements.
