5. Safety risks associated with the use of hydrogen

Hydrogen's development and wider adoption depend on controlling the risks it entails. These risks may relate to the production, transport, storage and use of hydrogen.

Hydrogen is an extremely flammable and explosive gas, which can cause fires and explosions in the event of a leak. According to a report published by ARIA (Analysis, Research and Information on Accidents), 84% of hydrogen-related accidents involve fires and/or explosions, while 16% involve non-ignited leaks, runaways without explosions and corrosions detected upstream.

Exposure to high concentrations of hydrogen can cause asphyxiation, which can be rapidly fatal. Also, skin or eye contact with liquid hydrogen or cold gas can cause potentially serious cold burns.
