7. Conclusion

In conclusion, hydrogen-based rail traction is emerging as a promising solution for the future of rail transport and as a replacement for diesel systems. It offers a number of significant advantages, such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, lower noise pollution, increased autonomy compared with batteries, rapid refuelling times and the possibility of using existing non-electrified rail infrastructures. However, this technology is not without its challenges.

Key challenges include hydrogen production costs, hydrogen storage and distribution, safety, the development of hydrogen refueling infrastructures and integration with existing rail systems. In addition, hydrogen must be produced sustainably to reduce its carbon footprint. The use of green hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources is essential to maximize the environmental benefits of this technology....
