3.1 Industrial context

Air Liquide has invested $250 million in a 30 t/day hydrogen liquefier. The Engineering Division was responsible for the design, construction and start-up of the unit. Inaugurated in 2022, this liquefier will supply 40,000 hydrogen vehicles on the Californian coast, accelerating the development of carbon-free mobility.

Hydrogen is produced by steam reforming of methane directly on the liquefaction site. The site's electricity comes from renewable energy sources and, with the aim of producing low-carbon hydrogen, the methane consumed is also derived from renewable gas.
