7. Environmental aspects
Fuel cells and the hydrogen industry as a whole should make a significant contribution to the objectives of the French National Low-Carbon Strategy (SNBC), which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The gradual decarbonization of energy production and transport will have a beneficial impact on environmental issues, and in this respect, the role of fuel cells, with their high yields, zero direct greenhouse gas emissions and multiple applications, will be essential; without, however, denying the complexity of the processes involved and, in particular, the clean production of hydrogen, which is highly dependent on the industrial development of water electrolysis powered by renewable energies (solar, wind, hydraulic, geothermal, etc.).
The contribution of nuclear power should also be considered, especially for high-temperature electrolysis.
