3. Industrial production and technical-economic aspects

3.1 Industrial hydrogen production

In 2015, annual global hydrogen production was around 60 Mt . Steam methane reforming accounted for 48% of total production, while reforming of heavier hydrocarbons accounted for 30%. Coal gasification accounted for 18%. Water electrolysis accounted for just 4% of production (2.4 Mt per year). This breakdown has not changed significantly in 2018.
