4. Tidal energy

4.1 Tidal power plants

The reference tidal power plant to date is the one commissioned in 1966 on France's La Rance estuary, between Saint-Malo and Dinard (figure 9 ). It consists of a dam across the estuary, housing 24 4-blade bulb turbines, 5.3 m in diameter, each rated at 10 MW, and capable of operating at a very low head of just one metre.
