5. Conclusion

Given the unsustainable nature of the current energy model, we need to embark on an energy transition, which will take place over a relatively long period of time.

The urgency of the measures to be taken, particularly to address the risks of climate change, will require the implementation of solutions specifically adapted to the transition period that lies ahead.

Implementing these solutions, however, will require an unprecedented effort and lead to major transformations of the current business model. Innovation will be required at all levels to enable the implementation of transition technologies and to facilitate the transition to new options. The European Union has adopted a very ambitious plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050; however, it is feared that such a goal will not be achievable on an international scale.
