6.1 Coulomb blocking

When an electron passes through a nanoparticle, it becomes electrically charged. The nanoparticle behaves like an electrical capacitor, and its electrical capacity must be taken into account. These charging effects are characterized by what is known as Coulomb blockade. When you want to place an extra electron on a nanoparticle, you have to supply it with energy:

Eadd=E+e2C( 11 )
