4. Example of application to a brake assembly
4.1 Brake system description
As the precise technical information on the hydraulic braking system technology used on a Douglas DC-10 aircraft selected by Nowlan and Heap in their report is no longer up to date, the braking system of a Boeing 737 aircraft using virtually identical technology has been taken as an example. Figure 7 shows the components of a main landing gear braking system (excluding external hydraulic lines). The disc brake system comprises 3 rotors and 4 stators. 8 hydraulically actuated pistons apply pressure to the rotors. Friction applied to the stators' pads then performs the required braking functions.
