5. Instructions for use and warnings: a few principles

Here we recall a few principles and refer to the literature (ISO/IEC Guide 37, CPSC Guide ) for further information.

5.1 Before writing an instruction manual

• Risk reduction begins with the product itself; instructions for use or warnings only serve to limit residual risk and inform users.

• Instructions for use are designed to respond to users' difficulties, after observing and understanding them.

• Only a small proportion of the population reads instruction manuals, and the majority never look...
