A material's ability to promote or inhibit combustion. Reaction to fire takes into account only the combustion aspect, excluding the emission of smoke and toxic gases.

The evolution of a material during a fire under various aspects: combustion, smoke emission, gas release, loss of properties (mechanical, insulating...).

Rating of a material to characterize its properties in terms of reaction to fire.

Rating of a material to characterize its properties in terms of smoke opacity and the toxicity of the gases emitted.
