5. Impression feed modes
The way in which a mold cavity is fed has a decisive influence on the quality and price of injected parts. The mold cavity can be fed with cold runners, where the material is frozen at the moment of ejection, or hot runners, where the material remains in a molten state at the moment of ejection.
5.1 Cold runner injection
In the oldest and simplest feeding method, the molten polymer flows directly into the cavity via a truncated cone-shaped channel, the contents of which are called a sprue. When the mold has several cavities, filling is carried out from the central channel into a network of distribution channels that feed the cavities via weirs. Along the way, the material cools and gradually solidifies as the pressure drops.
