3.1 The challenges of 3D design
Plastronic technologies are distinguished from standard electronics by the three-dimensional nature of their circuits. Where traditional electronics are limited to stacked planar architectures, plastronics lead to complex circuit shapes. As a result, traditional digital electronics design tools are ill-suited to the design of plastronic parts.
The design of plastronic devices is complex, combining electronic and mechanical design, as well as the product shaping process. As the influences are mutual, these two aspects of design must be carried out in concert.
