4. French standardization
One of the first important manifestations of standardization in France was the introduction of the metric system, instituted by the law of 18 germinal de l'an III (7 april 1795). The law of July 4, 1837 made it compulsory from January 1 er 1840.
4.1 French Standards Association (AFNOR)
AFNOR coordinates and leads the French standardization system. It distributes and promotes standards. It represents French standardization interests in European and international bodies.
