2. Elastomer performance
In this section, some specific properties of elastomers are presented to facilitate the selection of a compound for a given use.
2.1 Heat resistance
The service temperature limit of a rubber article cannot be separated from the conditions of use. The length of time at temperature, the application cycle (continuous or discontinuous), the environment (air, water, oils, ozone, etc.) and the type of stress (static or dynamic) all influence the final behavior of the product.
Under normal aerobic conditions, degradation begins at a temperature linked to the chemical structure of the elastomer, but this can be modified by the addition of oxygen, ozone and heat protection agents specific to each type of compound.
