5. Different types of adhesive
5.1 Epoxies and modified epoxies
High-performance composites usually comprise an epoxy resin matrix, with various reinforcements: glass, carbon, Kevlar (aramid fibers) or, in the aerospace sector, boron.
For these composites, the immediate choice is to use epoxy resin-based adhesives, which are also the most suitable.
These adhesives have been the most widely used for structural bonding since 1945-1950. This gives us over 50 years' cumulative experience in structural and high-tech fields such as aeronautics and aerospace, followed more recently by automotive, electronics and mechanical engineering.
