3. Multi-layer structures

3.1 General information, examples

In multilayer structures produced by coextrusion, the outer layer is generally selected for its mechanical and barrier properties, while the inner layer is selected for its weldability and food compatibility. Intermediate layers, on the other hand, enhance the barrier effect as well as the adhesion between layers (table 3 ).

It should be noted here that many of the technologies described in the following sections (oxygen scavengers, nanocomposites, etc.) are integrated into multilayer structures.
