2. European standardization in maintenance

2.1 History

At the initiative of DIN (Deutsche Institut für Normen) in November 1993, a technical committee, TC 319, was set up to take over responsibility from April 1994 for drawing up European maintenance standards. Based on the original request, which focused mainly on the German standard DIN 31051 "Maintenance terminology and measurements", the first decision taken by TC 319, at France's instigation, was to extend the TC's remit to cover issues that seemed topical at the time. This led to the creation of five working groups (WGs) to address the following topics:

  • classification of maintenance services (WG1) ;

  • maintenance documentation (WG2) ;

  • contractual relations...
