5. Limits and obstacles
5.1 Gadget or real utility
In the previous chapter, we discussed the various potential contributions and possible levers for transformation towards more sustainable consumption. Less centralized, less standardized, less "disposable", a new mode of production should make it possible to reduce environmental pressure.
But this argument is based on the premise that the products that could be manufactured by 3D printing systems would necessarily be useful or necessary to individuals.
The reality - and all you have to do to convince yourself of this is visit the websites that share printable objects - is not at all in line with this vision: figurines, miniatures, decorative objects, jewelry... make up the bulk of the items that can be printed...
