2. Reactive systems
In order to guarantee the durability of a material's flame-retardant properties and avoid the release of potentially hazardous compounds into the atmosphere, it appears necessary to immobilize the phosphorus-containing flame retardant within the polymer structure. This can be achieved by creating a covalent bond between the phosphorus flame retardant and the matrix to be flame-retarded. In this way, migration and release of the phosphorus-containing flame retardant into the atmosphere becomes impossible. Moreover, plasticization associated with the incorporation of an additive can also be limited or even cancelled, and the mechanical properties of the flame-retardant materials maintained. In the reactive approach, the phosphorus flame retardant must therefore possess one or more system-reactive functions within its structure. These reactive functions are linked to the nature of the polymer....

Standards and norms
The French decree of November 21, 2002 (as amended) on the reaction to fire of construction and fitting-out products, now introduces "euroclasses" of reaction to fire. Euroclasses, defined in European standard EN 13501-1, are a system of classification into five categories of requirement: A1, A2, B, C, D, E, F.
This site lists the most important standards for retardants, according to the materials...
