
4. Interaction of γ-rays in matter
Electromagnetic radiation γ has no electric charge. They interact in matter according to three main processes: the photoelectric effect, the Compton effect and the creation of e + e pairs - . The relative importance of these three effects depends on the energy of the radiation γ and the atomic number Z of the attenuating medium (figure 8 ).
