3.1 Helium-neon laser
The simplified energy level diagram (figure 3 ) shows how this laser works, distinguishing between pumping by helium electron-atom collisions, then selective excitation of metastable neon levels by quasi-resonant collisions, giving the possibility of several transitions (table 1 ).
