5. Main applications
Thanks to their properties, POMs have found numerous industrial applications in all areas of mechanical parts, replacing metals and thermosetting plastics. Their most important limitation lies in fire resistance, mitigated by the fact that most parts are small in size. Injection-molded parts account for 90% of the total market, with plates, rods and tubes representing 10%.
5.1 Automotive
The automotive industry is by far the largest POM market. It is estimated that there are several thousand POM parts in every vehicle, the main ones being :
fuel gauge / filter / pump assembly ;
housings and lock mechanisms ;
window regulator elements ;

Polyacetal producers
Both homopolymers and copolymers are relatively difficult to produce, and have been for a long time. DuPont and Celanese were the only two producers. Numerous new plants have sprung up in the Far East.
Only DuPont and Asahi offer homopolymers. All other producers offer copolymers. Total worldwide capacity is around 780 kt (table
