2. Surge arresters for power networks

2.1 Description

According to standard NF EN 61643-11, there are two types of surge protector: single-port surge protectors (input and output combined) and dual-port surge protectors (separate input and output). The former are inserted in parallel with the line, and the latter in series with it. The latter therefore carry the load current, and must be sized accordingly. These arresters can contain a decoupling element (inductor, resistor, transformer or filter) between two components, or simply a length of wire.

Surge arresters can also be specified by the fact that they contain limiting components (varistors, etc.), switching components, etc. (spark gaps, etc.) or a combination of two components.
